THERE IS GOING TO BE A BRAND NEW SAILOR MOON ANIME!

It's going to start in the summer of 2013, and it looks like it's confirmed that Mitsuishi Kotono will be voicing Usagi again.

Even better, it's going to be broadcast world-wide simultaneously. I think via Nico Nico Douga, but I can't remember where I read that.

ETA: Naoko made the announcement on Nico Nico. So we don't know where it will be broadcast yet.

Of course, the downside of a brand new story means no Shitennou, but this is too awesome not to squee about.

And they had better get Megumi Ogata back as Haruka and Han Keiko as Luna! Now that I think about it, didn't Rei and Setsuna's voice actors retire? Hmmm. I know that Takato Yasuhiro (Artemis) and Hisakawa Aya (Ami) are still acting. (As is Onosaka Masaya [Jadeite] but I guess that doesn't matter since his character won't be appearing.)

Oh, well. NEW SAILOR MOON! NEW SAILOR MOON! NEW SAILOR MOON!

(Sorry about all the gifs, it's just that I CAN'T STOP OMG!)

The Sailor Moon anime came out two decades ago.

...man, I'm feeling old now.

I keep wondering if the series is ever going to be re-released in the US (and Canada), though. I know that it's back in Italy, Germany, and Mexico. From what I've read, it sounds like it's not easy to get the rights. Apparently it took two years of negotiating with Toei before Mexico was able to get it. I've also heard (although I haven't been able to confirm it) that Naoko Takeuchi won't authorize a re-release unless the dub is well done and has little to no editing.

That's fine by me, since I can't stand the original English dub. I'd love to see the series redubbed with better actors and a faithful translation. (Also, NO FEMALE ZOISITE.) Funimation has said that they are interested in acquiring it, and they have some good actors.

(Todd Haberkorn as Umino, please?)

However, I've also heard a rumor that Naoko is not allowing any redubs. If this is true, then we're screwed, as is any other country with a lousy dub. (I don't know about the Italian dub, but I've heard good things about the German and Mexican dubs, which might be why those countries are the ones who have managed to get the rights.) Ugh.

(I admit that I've thought about getting the Mexican DVDs to help me work on my Spanish, but there's that whole DVD region thing, and I don't own a region free DVD player.)

Not only that, but Toei has been cracking down on people who upload the series (not just the anime, but the Sera Myu musicals and the live action PGSM series) to YouTube. Although it looks like you can find it elsewhere. At least for now.

I did find this, though. (Region free DVDs with English subtitles FTW!) If I know that the series is going to be re-released here, I'd prefer to wait and buy it then, but there's been no news yet, and this is really, really tempting me...

(Although when Funimation gets a big-name series, they tend to keep quiet about it for a while and make a big announcement at a con. Usually Anime Expo, San Diego Comic Con, or Otakon. So maybe I'll wait until this year's convention season is done with first.)

The same site also has Mawaru Penguindrum, which I've been itching to see ever since I heard about it. (It's by Kunihiko Ikuhara, the guy who created Utena. That's all I need to know.) It hasn't been released in North America either...

Geez, I've been so tired lately, and I can't seem to figure out why. I swear, I could probably sleep for 20 hours a day if I let myself. I've been taking additional B and D vitamins, but it doesn't do more than take the edge off.

Anyhow, I don't have anything really interesting to write about, so I'll just post some more BSSM fanart.

(I really seem to get onto themes with fanart, don't I? For a long time, it was nothing but Harry Potter, and lately it's been nothing but Sailor Moon. I swear, I do have other interests.)

Queen Beryl (Black and White)

Queen Beryl (Color)

This was drawn free-hand in ink, and I don't think it came out all that bad, all things considered. I wasn't originally planning on coloring it, but I decided that I really need to practice my digital coloring.

Happy (belated) New Year, everyone.

I've been working graveyards for the past month or so, and while it can be hellish when we're busy, I've found that the quiet times early in the morning offer a nice opportunity to do some drawing. And since I've rediscovered how much I am fond of Sailor Moon (especially the Dark Kingdom), I've been doing a lot of doodles of them lately. Hence this...

Sadly, my quest to find new fanwork of the DK has not turned up much, and most of the recent stuff I've found is Shitennou/Senshi, of which I am not a fan. (Although Four King Hell does have me laughing my ass off most of the time and loving it, but it's the exception rather than the rule.) *sigh* Well... there does seem to be an active anime-based DK fandom in Russia, but since I don't read/speak Russian, I'm still screwed. I can still enjoy the fanart, obviously, but what I wouldn't give for a well-written KxZ 'fic that I haven't already read a thousand times...

In any case, I've been in this phase for the past several months where I just couldn't seem to do anything artistic. I'm really hoping that I'm starting to pull out of that slump, becuase it's been affecting me in a lot of negative ways. The quality of my drawings still isn't as high as I'd like it to be, but I'm hoping that it will improve as I get back into shape.

Hmmm... it's been a while, hasn't it? *wipes off the dust*

Anyhow, I hope that everyone has a very happy [insert holiday of your choice here]. Here's some non-holiday themed fanart. I think I may be starting to pull out of this artistic slump that I've been in for so long.

I just realized that, although I posted this in [livejournal.com profile] shitennou a while ago, I never made an entry here. Oops...

Zoisaito

I tried out some different techniques with this, and I'm rather happy with how it came out. You may recognize the black-and-white outline of this image from a previous entry.

Just in case you didn't think that the new live-action Nephrite was scary enough, look at this!

First he had Rubeus-hair, and now he has a mullet! A goddamn mullet! *sobs* Oh, those poor Shitennou... what have they done to you?

...and what in the world were they on when they did your character designs for this version?

(I'm back. I also have the flu, courtesy of my sister, so I'm feeling a bit woosy at the moment.)

Having gone through my email and caught up on LJ entries, I went to read the latest Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon synonpsis. See, I haven't actually downloaded any of the episodes. I finally managed find an episode on Kazaa Lite, but it's a bitch of a download, and my poor dial-up connection just can't handle it. As a result, I've been subsiding on the illustrated episode translations at this site.

Anyhow, my brain is still having trouble with the fact that that white-haired, caped Shitennou is actually Zoisite, not Kunzite. It is now also having trouble registering the fact that Zoisite died before Nephrite. (The latter, by the way, seems to be doing a lot more whining in this version. And his obsession with Beryl is giving me the creeps.)

And then Kunzite appears...

I think Zoi's redesign prepared me for Kunzite's new appearance. (Although since Zoisite got the white hair and grey eyes, I half expected Kunzite to have wavy, dark blonde hair and green eyes.) Or perhaps I didn't find it as strange because more than one fanfic author has given Kunzite black hair prior to getting his magic powers. I think that part of me will be expecting his hair to turn white over the course of the series.

It's a pity that he didn't appear until after Zoi died, though... If they had tossed in even one cute scene with them together, I could have forgiven the changes they made. Maybe. (If they had kissed on screen, on the other hand... ^___^ Yeah, like that would have happened. Still, it makes for a nice daydream.)

[livejournal.com profile] sudaki? [livejournal.com profile] kunzgita? I await your theories...

(Did I spell that right?)

Guess who splurged her spending money on the BSSM season one box set?

The sound, by the way, really is lousy. It sounds oddly muffled, and I think some of my fansubs are actually higher quality. For some unknown reason, ADV also decided to put the Next Episode Preview after the opening credits, so that the sequence goes something like this...

Opening Credits --> Preview for Episode #10 --> Episode #10 --> Ending Credits

I don't quite get the point. It's rather disorientating, actually... And no Omake either.

Still, I am quite delighted to have all the episodes on DVD finally. I never did end up getting fansubs for the entire first season, so I've been enjoying myself immensely by watching the season straight through. (Although the repetetive nature of the Jadeite episodes does get fairly monotonous.) Would you believe that this was the first time I've seen episode #31? (That's the kitty episode where Zoisite gets chased around the sewer by an army of rats.) Now that was a cute episode.

For those of you who are looking at me in askance... Yes, I like Sailor Moon, thank you very much. It's not my favourite series, and it certainly isn't the best anime out there, but it's still my guilty pleasure.

(Especially the shitennou.)

Speaking of which, here's a sketch I drew of Zoisite last night:

Zoisaito-sama!

Of course, I think I'm the only one left who still likes BSSM and the Four Kings... I'm still on the lookout for any new 'fics and art, but the pickings have been pretty slim.

Anyhow, I'm working my way through a rather nasty cold, so I think I'm going to curl up with a hot mug of tea and a book for a while.

(And my thoughts go out to [livejournal.com profile] erythros and anyone else in southern California right now. Stay safe, you guys.)
