Appeals Court Upholds LA Sodomy Law

"NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana's 197-year-old sodomy law does not discriminate against gays and lesbians, a state appeals court ruled...

"This decision continues to put Louisiana outside the mainstream," said John D. Rawls, an attorney for Louisiana Electorate of Gays and Lesbians Inc., which challenged the law.

"We are still the only state whose courts deny a right to privacy to its citizens, we are still the only state whose courts have upheld sodomy laws, we are still back in the 18th century unfortunately," he said.

Oddly enough, I don't believe that this law discriminates against homosexuals... Quite frankly, it's a stupid law that should be thrown out because it is discriminatory against everyone.

Of course, the term 'sodomy' really doesn't have anything to do with gays and lesbians. It was coined by early Christian philosophers and was used as a catch-all term for any sexual activity not committed within a sanctioned marriage for the purpose of conceiving a child. The term sodomy did include any sex between members of the same gender, but it also referred to premarital or extramarital sex, and oral/anal sex under any circumstances.

(At least, this is what my research has shown me. I could be wrong... I'm not a theologian.)

The article then goes on to say that, "The state Supreme Court ruled that the law against oral and anal sex does not violate the right to privacy..." That really cracks me up. How is it not a violation of privacy?

Come on, people. What two (or more...) consenting adults do within the privacy of their own home is their business and no one elses. Let people live their own lives!

Besides, how many people think that this law will actually make people stop doing those very things? Anyone? Didn't think so...
