THERE IS GOING TO BE A BRAND NEW SAILOR MOON ANIME!
It's going to start in the summer of 2013, and it looks like it's confirmed that Mitsuishi Kotono will be voicing Usagi again.
Even better, it's going to be broadcast world-wide simultaneously. I think via Nico Nico Douga, but I can't remember where I read that.
ETA: Naoko made the announcement on Nico Nico. So we don't know where it will be broadcast yet.
Of course, the downside of a brand new story means no Shitennou, but this is too awesome not to squee about.

I just got back from seeing Pixar's Brave.
I don't bother to see movies in the theaters much anymore, because it just doesn't seem worth it, but I'm a Pixar fan and really excited about this one because OMG FEMALE PROTAGONIST! YES! FINALLY!
See, one of my biggest complaints with Pixar's movies was the lack of female leads. Oh, they've had some kickass female characters, but these characters were never the focus of the story. So I decided to spend the money and see it on the big screen.
You know what? I loved it. Not only did we finally get to see a brave, independent female lead, but, even better, there was no romance in the plot. (At least not for Merida, that is. Her parents are obviously happily married.) The story focuses on Merida, her life as a Princess in a mythical Scottish kingdom, and the conflict she feels about her duties to her clan and the fact that she'd rather be racing around the woods with her bow and arrows rather than learning more feminine behavior.
Yeah, the Princess-who-is-more-a-tomboy-than-a-lady thing has been done before, but Pixar really seems to have a knack for wonderful characterization (Oh, man... the interaction between Merida and her father was great. Plus, the heavier focus on the relationship between her and her mother was very touching.) and storytelling, so I'm not complaining. And I can't say that I've ever had anything bad to say about their artwork.
I know that there's wank going on about this film, because I've already come across entries on Tumblr about it. Parents wailing that they can't take their son to see this move, because what will they do if they admire a female character? The horror! It might even turn him - gasp! - GAY. Also, apparently the fact Merida isn't interested in getting married means that she's a lesbian, so clearly Pixar is totally promoting the Homosexual Agenda.
Yeah.
I'm going to wait and tackle those arguments later. I might actually try and write something up about the movie, it's portrayal of gender roles, and the response it's been getting. We'll see. Everyone here in the US is still flipping out over the Supreme Court's decision over health care reform, and given how many political blogs I follow, it's going to take a while before I can focus on much else.
Anyhow, in my opinion, Brave is much better than most of the other stuff that's been coming out lately (although The Hunger Games was decent) and actually worth the cost of a ticket.
One teensy not-quite-complaint: With all the running around and horse-riding Merida does, she'd spend half of the night getting her hair untangled. As someone who has long, crazy, curly hair like hers, I've learned this the hard way.
(Now that I think about it, I need some Brave userpics... Guess I'll use Wall-E for this entry since they're both Pixar movies.)

One of the best things about this time of the year is that the jacaranda trees are in full bloom. San Diego is gorgeous anyway, and the mild weather means that there is always something flowering, but these trees almost look like something out of a dream. Since there are a lot of them in my neighborhood, just going for a walk can put a smile on my face.
The fact that purple happens to be my favorite color has nothing to do with it. Really. ^^;

Perhaps I read/watch too much science fiction, but does anyone else see how this could go horribly, horribly wrong? If the robots don't gain sentience and rebel on their human oppressors, then the aliens they contact may very well destroy us all.
Of course, imagine hanging out in the afterlife with everyone else and having this conversation:
"So, how'd you die?"
"War."
"Heart attack."
"Cancer."
"Car accident."
"Overdose."
"Alien invasion."
Yeah, that'd be a pretty cool way to go.

...man, I'm feeling old now.
I keep wondering if the series is ever going to be re-released in the US (and Canada), though. I know that it's back in Italy, Germany, and Mexico. From what I've read, it sounds like it's not easy to get the rights. Apparently it took two years of negotiating with Toei before Mexico was able to get it. I've also heard (although I haven't been able to confirm it) that Naoko Takeuchi won't authorize a re-release unless the dub is well done and has little to no editing.
That's fine by me, since I can't stand the original English dub. I'd love to see the series redubbed with better actors and a faithful translation. (Also, NO FEMALE ZOISITE.) Funimation has said that they are interested in acquiring it, and they have some good actors.
(Todd Haberkorn as Umino, please?)
However, I've also heard a rumor that Naoko is not allowing any redubs. If this is true, then we're screwed, as is any other country with a lousy dub. (I don't know about the Italian dub, but I've heard good things about the German and Mexican dubs, which might be why those countries are the ones who have managed to get the rights.) Ugh.
(I admit that I've thought about getting the Mexican DVDs to help me work on my Spanish, but there's that whole DVD region thing, and I don't own a region free DVD player.)

It's nice having a break from work and all, but... *sigh* Why couldn't I have broken my left wrist instead? I'm right handed, so I could still draw and whatnot, but it wouldn't hinder my ability to walk around and, you know, do things.
Anyhow, thanks to LJ's latest "upgrade", I went ahead and created a Dreamwidth account. I have the same username there that I have here, for anyone who is curious. I haven't done anything with it yet, mostly because DW's been really slow for me lately.
I'll still be keeping this account. There are too many communities I'm involved in and people I follow here to give it up.
In any case, I hope everyone had a good holiday season. And I sincerely hope that 2012 will be an improvement on 2011.

Anyhow, thanks to LJ's latest "upgrade", I went ahead and created a Dreamwidth account. I have the same username there that I have here, for anyone who is curious. I haven't done anything with it yet, mostly because DW's been really slow for me lately.
I'll still be keeping this account. There are too many communities I'm involved in and people I follow here to give it up.
In any case, I hope everyone had a good holiday season. And I sincerely hope that 2012 will be an improvement on 2011.
Except that being stuck at home means that I really don't have a lot to write about.
It's nice having a break from work and all, but... *sigh* Why couldn't I have broken my left wrist instead? I'm right handed, so I could still draw and whatnot, but it wouldn't hinder my ability to walk around and, you know, do things.
