Recent interview with J. K. Rowling reveals a new tidbit about Albus Dumbledore: he was gay and in love with Grindewald.

My favorite bit of the interview is when Jo says, "Just imagine the fan fiction now."

My dear, the slashers are way ahead of you.

(I's just realized that I have neither a "SQUEE!" icon nor a GLBT-Pride one. So I went with one with a homoerotic one instead.)

My friend called me this morning to tell me about it! My response: "Am I supposed to be surprised?" But apparently some people are. Haha.

I am glad that she answered the question as matter-of-factly as she did. It's not like she was trying to write Harry Potter as one long GLBT-pride message--it's just that that was a part of who that character was. I'm even happy that she didn't put it in the book explicitly, even though some of the comments seem angry about it--I don't feel it was absolutely necessary to be in the book; as every good writer knows, you try not to write characters, scenes, or words that are unnecessary.

Well, I'll admit that it surprised me that it was Dumbledore who turned out to be gay, although I'm not surprised that there was a main character who was gay. It's only logical that at least one of them would be.

I agree, Dumbleldore's sexuality was not the point of the series. Besides, if you read between the lines, there are hints. A lot of people (not just slashers) wondered about the exact nature of his relationship with Grindewald after reading DH.

Reading comments on some of the big HP sites has been interesting, though. Thankfully, I haven't seen many obviously anti-GLBT posts.
